9 dead as bus plunges into gorge, Andhra Pradesh

Over 20 injured as bus carrying pilgrims veers off Chinturu–Maredumilli ghat road

A tragic road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitarama Raju district claimed at least nine lives and left more than 20 people injured early on Friday. The incident occurred on the Chinturu–Maredumilli ghat road, a narrow and winding stretch known for steep curves and limited visibility.

The private bus, carrying around 35 passengers, was on its way to Annavaram after the group had offered prayers at the Bhadrachalam temple. The journey turned fatal near Tulasipakalu village, where the bus reportedly veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge. Preliminary information indicates that dense early-morning fog may have significantly reduced visibility, causing the driver to lose control on the sharp bend. The terrain and the lack of protective barricades in some sections added to the risk.

Local residents, police teams, and emergency responders rushed to the scene soon after the crash was reported. Reaching the passengers was challenging due to the steep slope and the damaged state of the vehicle. Despite the difficult conditions, rescue teams managed to pull out several survivors who had been trapped under seats and metal debris.

The injured were immediately moved to nearby hospitals, including the Chintur Community Health Centre and a hospital in Bhadrachalam. Doctors have stated that some passengers have serious injuries, and the death toll may change depending on their condition. Authorities have directed hospitals to ensure all emergency care is made available.

Senior officials visited the accident site and supervised rescue efforts. The state government has expressed deep sorrow and instructed a detailed inquiry into the cause of the accident. Early findings point to poor visibility, overspeeding on a curve, or a mechanical fault, but the exact reason will be confirmed after technical examination.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed condolences to the affected families and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the deceased and the injured.

The accident has renewed concerns about safety on ghat roads frequently used by pilgrims and tourists, especially during early hours when fog makes driving difficult. Authorities are expected to review safety measures on this route to prevent similar tragedies.
