Former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, one of India’s senior-most Congress leaders and a respected parliamentarian, passed away on Friday at the age of 90. He died at his home in Latur, Maharashtra, after a short illness. His family members said he had been unwell for some days, and his condition had worsened on Thursday night. He breathed his last on Friday morning.
Shivraj Patil was widely known for his calm demeanour, sharp understanding of parliamentary procedures, and his long service across key positions in the government. Over several decades, he represented the Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven times, becoming one of the most trusted political faces in the region.
Patil began his national political journey in the late 1970s and gradually rose to hold some of the highest offices in the country. He served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996, where he was praised for maintaining decorum in the House and ensuring fair, disciplined debates. His style of leadership was often described as quiet but firm, and he was widely respected by members across political parties.
In 2004, he was appointed Union Home Minister in the UPA government. His tenure saw major internal security challenges. The most significant among them was the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008. Patil stepped down soon after, taking moral responsibility for the lapses in security. Though the decision was difficult, it reflected his belief in accountability in public office.
After leaving the Home Ministry, Patil continued to serve the country. He was appointed Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, roles he held from 2010 to 2015. Even in these constitutional positions, he focused on governance, education, and administrative reforms.
Patil is survived by his son Shailesh, daughter-in-law Archana, and two granddaughters. His passing has led to widespread tributes from political leaders across India, who remembered him as a dignified, seasoned leader who contributed significantly to India’s parliamentary and administrative systems. Many described him as a person who upheld integrity and restraint throughout his public life.
