Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Homebound” in Oscar shortlist

Two friends chase police dreams, confronting societal pressures and personal challenges in a compelling journey

Neeraj Ghaywan’s critically acclaimed film Homebound has been shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards (Oscars 2026), bringing India closer to an Oscar nomination after a competitive selection process. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the list, which features 15 films from around the world still in contention for a final nomination.

The shortlist comes from 86 submissions globally, highlighting Homebound’s resonance with international audiences and critics alike. The film tells the story of two childhood friends, played by Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, who aspire to become police officers, navigating the challenges of a society that often tests their determination and integrity. Janhvi Kapoor also features prominently in the narrative, adding depth to the film’s emotional and social dimensions.

Homebound has already garnered significant attention on the global stage. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, where it received positive critical reviews, and was later showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival, earning accolades for its storytelling, direction, and performances. The film’s combination of compelling characters and socially relevant themes has positioned it as a standout in the international festival circuit.

Producers, including Karan Johar, expressed their gratitude on social media, highlighting the recognition as a milestone for Indian cinema. Ghaywan, known for his previous works that balance artistic sensibility with social commentary, has further cemented his reputation as a filmmaker capable of engaging both domestic and global audiences.

The final Oscar nominations will be revealed in January 2026, with the awards ceremony scheduled for March 15, 2026. If nominated, Homebound would join a growing list of Indian films recognized on the international stage, continuing the country’s journey in global cinema recognition.
