Google Maps is introducing a set of AI-powered features in India, designed to make navigation smarter, safer, and more intuitive. Using Google’s Gemini AI, the app will now offer voice guidance, personalized travel tips, and real-time safety updates for users across the country.
Maps will also provide location-specific tips. For example, it can highlight popular market stalls, restaurants, or attractions and offer practical advice like whether bargaining is common at a particular market.
One of the major updates is voice-assisted navigation. Users can ask questions while driving, such as “Find the nearest petrol pump,” “Where can I park?” or “Take me to a good restaurant nearby.” The app will respond instantly, reducing the need to type and helping drivers stay focused on the road.
Safety features have been enhanced significantly. Google Maps will now alert users about accident-prone areas, show speed limits, and notify drivers of major traffic disruptions even when they are not actively navigating. The app is also integrated with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to provide real-time updates on highway closures, ongoing repairs, and amenities such as fuel stations and restrooms.
India-specific features include customizable navigation icons for two-wheelers and support for nine Indian languages in voice guidance, making it easier for riders to navigate complex roads and flyovers. Users in select cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kochi can also save metro tickets in Google Wallet and access them through Maps.
The rollout of these features will begin gradually on both Android and iOS devices. With these updates, Google Maps aims to provide a more personalized, user-friendly, and safety-conscious navigation experience, catering specifically to the needs of Indian commuters and travelers.
