WhatsApp to add AI photo editing

Meta AI tools will let users restyle, modify, and animate images directly within Status updates

WhatsApp is preparing to introduce new artificial intelligence-powered tools that will let users edit and creatively transform photos shared on their Status updates. The upcoming feature, driven by Meta AI, aims to make photo editing easier and more engaging by allowing changes to be made directly within the app, without relying on external editing software.

According to reports, the feature is currently being tested in WhatsApp’s beta versions for both Android and iOS. Select users can already see an upgraded photo editing interface while creating a Status update. Instead of basic filters and stickers, WhatsApp will offer advanced AI-based visual effects that can significantly change the look and feel of an image.

The new tools will allow users to restyle photos using preset artistic themes such as Anime, Comic, Clay, Painting, 3D, and Kawaii. These styles do not simply add overlays; instead, the AI recreates the image in the selected visual format. Users will also have the option to regenerate multiple versions of the same style by tapping a “Redo” button until they find the look they prefer.

In addition to visual styles, WhatsApp’s Meta AI editor will support prompt-based editing. Users can type short instructions to add or remove objects, change backgrounds, or enhance certain elements within a photo. The AI is designed to fill in missing areas naturally, helping images look more polished and realistic after edits.

Another key feature under testing is photo animation. This will allow static images to be turned into short animated visuals, adding motion and making Status updates more expressive and eye-catching. Such animations could help users highlight moments in a more dynamic way.

The rollout of these features is expected to happen gradually. While the tools are currently limited to beta testers, WhatsApp is likely to expand access to more users after gathering feedback and fine-tuning performance. Some users on stable versions of the app may begin seeing the feature in phases.

WhatsApp now continues to strengthen its use of AI across the platform. Once fully launched, the Meta AI photo editing tools could transform how users share moments on Status, making WhatsApp a more creative and all-in-one social communication app.
